One of the most unique horse-drawn parades in the country is in Tucson, Arizona. Every year 200,000 people line the streets to watch as historical wagons and carriages, decorated with a distinctive Southwest flair, 1925, Mayor John White, Leroy "Jessi" James & Leighton Kramer. Imagine being a child and getting to spend the day cross-country skiing and snowshoeing through the woods in the beautiful Adirondacks region of New York State, and then returning in the spring and fall to jump on a brightly-colored mountain bike that takes you over hill and dale. Sounds like great fun, especially following along as the youngsters venture out on miles of trails through the forest and meadows, stopping to spot owls in the trees and tadpoles, turtles and salamanders in the pond, or venture down to the pastures beyond the barn to meet the menagerie of alpacas, goats,…
In March 29, 1911, the cold, calm, early morning darkness of Albany, New York, was pierced by the desperate ringing of fire bells throughout the city. Part of the State Capitol housing the Assembly Chamber was ablaze. Quickly responding was the entire 150-man Albany Fire Department and their equipment consisting solely of hook and ladder trucks and horse-drawn steam pumpers (Albany's first fire truck didn't arrive until 1912). While the building suffered several million dollars' worth of damage, the most devastating loss was the majority of the contents of the State Library housed on the third and fourth floors. At…
Looking back over the history of World Percheron Congresses, it comes as a bit of a surprise to find out that the very first one was held in ... England! Since then, the majority of World Congresses have taken place in North America, with France playing host twice more, in 1989 and 2001. The 1989 World Percheron Congress, held at the Haras du…

During my years of veterinary practice I have come in contact with individuals from several species of animals that, for one reason or another, were hell-bent on my destruction. Under these circumstances it is easy to picture the mean dog, the clawing and biting cat, the enraged herd bull, the wily old cow that is guarding her calf, a mare who is protecting her newborn foal and the horse who would bite you and strike you and stomp out your life. Let’s not forget in this group of animals; I have to add the vicious old boar and the newly…
The much quoted French philosopher Voltaire cherished freedom of speech. "I disapprove of what you say," he wrote a fellow philospher, "but I will defend to the death your right to say it." His quote is basic to the democratic process. Members of democratic organizations have the right to voice their opinions. Members, whose opinions have appeal, should be candidates for election to an organization's Board of Directors at an annual meeting. If elected, it is important they share their opinions with fellow Board members. However, once an issue has been fully debated by the Board, a vote should be…
